Amy Hirons grew up in the Hawaiian Islands, obtained a Masters of Science in Zoology at the University of Northern Colorado, and obtained a Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Her research extends from the Arctic to the Antarctic with research sites in Hawai'i, Peru, Alaska, Russia, and coastal Florida. She uses organisms to help her study the ocean realms, including seagrass, mangroves, zooplankton, seabirds, fish, sea turtles, and marine mammals.

Her Charismatic Megafauna and Oceanography Laboratory (CMOL) supports both graduate and undergraduate research.
