Sharpen your leadership skills and work on a team to bring honors events to life. Support the college's event-planning and beyond-the-classroom opportunities as an Honors Advocate.

What Do Honors Advocates Do?

As an Honors Advocate, you'll:

  • Work with the Honors Academic Program team to plan, promote, and support honors events, activities, and initiatives each semester
  • Volunteer for at least 5 Honors events each semester with a minimum of 1 per month
  • Attend at least three Shark Preview receptions, assisting with set-up/break-down for three of these weekends
  • Serve as a speaker for at least one Shark Preview Informational Session
  • Volunteer at least one hour of your time toward USS set-up, break-down, or administration (if you are not participating)
  • Wear your honors shirt every Wear Honors Wednesday-a weekly honors tradition where students wear their honors shirt each Wednesday to show their honors pride and represent the college on campus
  • Gauge student interest in events
  • Represent the college at recruitment and orientation events

How to Become an Honors Advocate

You must apply and interview to become an Advocate. The Academic Program Manager selects both current honors students and new honors students at the beginning of each fall semester. All Advocates serve through the end of the winter semester.

Advocates should expect to attend meetings with the Academic Program team every week for an hour. To retain the status of Honors Advocate, you must reapply each academic year. The Advocate team includes students from across NSU's academic majors and years to reflect the diverse perspectives, needs, and experiences of honors students.

To qualify as an Advocate, you must:

  • Be a member of the Farquhar Honors College

  • Be in good academic standing within the university and the Honors College

  • Have at least two remaining semesters (one academic year) at NSU

  • Submit a resume and complete an interview with the Academic Program Team

  • Commit to actively participate as a volunteer Honors Advocate for one full academic year
