Title:

Associate Professor - Chemistry

College/Division:

Halmos College of Arts and Sciences

Dr. Arthur Sikora received his Ph.D. in Chemistry/Biophysics from the University of Virginia in 2016 focusing on magnetic resonance and protein structural biology as well as lipid dynamics and diversity of protein transport mechanisms. Currently, his lab is interested in student biochemistry lab curriculum innovation.

As part of an international NSF funded collaboration he helped design and develop research-based labs that expand research experiences to all enrolled students. Recently he was awarded an NSF IUSE grant to improve the technological capacities in the science teaching labs. He has authored or co-authored 10 papers in peer-reviewed journals and presented his biochemical and pedagogical research at national and international conferences.

Research in the Sikora lab is focused on curriculum development and innovation for biochemistry students. Specifically, as it relates to the implementation and assessment of course-based undergraduate research experiences (CURE). CUREs are a promising way to increase student exposure to research that is increasing in popularity. A major hurdle preventing further expansion of CUREs centers around assessment design. Understanding what existing CUREs teach well and where there is need for improvement is instrumental towards designing better assessment resources for research-based education. The development of these kinds of materials will lead to increasing adoption of CUREs exposing more students to research while still in college.
