Dr. Julie Torruellas Garcia is a professor and director of undergraduate research in the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences. After earning a doctoral degree in microbiology and immunology from the University of Miami, Dr. Garcia conducted a post-doctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Cancer Institute. Dr. Garcia teaches a variety of courses, including Microbiology/Lab, Introduction to Biology Research I, Cellular and Molecular Biology and Honors Epidemics. Research in her lab is conducted by NSU undergraduate and graduate students and focuses on identifying and characterizing phage, viruses that infect bacteria, for potential use as alternative treatments for antibiotic resistant bacterial infections. Her research has been published in various journals, including Microbiology Spectrum, Microbiology Resource Announcements, the Journal of Microbiology and Biology Education and Frontiers in Education.
